Lincoln Marathon to sponsor Shoe Drive

Here is your chance to help create One World Running!  As a part of the 32nd Annual Lincoln National Guard Marathon and Half-Marathon, runners are being asked to bring pairs of used running shoes to the Runners’ Expo on Saturday, May 2nd and donate them to One World Running.  There will be a collection site for the used running shoes at both the Runners’ Expo and the Pastathon.  One World Running takes shoes donated by runners and uses them to fulfill its mission of promoting an awareness of health, fitness and nutrition by providing running shoes to those in need in the United States and around the world (www.oneworldrunning.blogspot.com).  Please remember to bring your used shoes on race weekend and donate them to this great organization.

Barrios and Sandrock to Speak and Run at the Lincoln Marathon

Arturo Barrios and Michael Sandrock will also be interacting with runners and speaking at the Runners’ Expo.  Barrios and Sandrock will speak on Sandrock’s book Running with the Legends, Training and Racing Insights from 21 Great Runners.  Both Sandrock and Barrios are running the 32nd Annual Lincoln National Guard Marathon and Half-Marathon as a part of the non-profit organization Runners With A Reason (www.runnerswithareason.org).

Arturo Barrios holds the distinction of being one of the world’s greatest runners over the course of the last quarter century.  In 1986, Barrios, recently graduated from college, burst on to the international racing scene by winning 13 of the 14 races that he entered in his first year competing at the international level.  Soon thereafter Barrios set world records in the 10,000 meters, the 20,000 meters and the one hour run.  His world record in the 10,000 meters stood intact from August 18, 1989 until July 5, 1993.  In 1991, Barrios became the first man to ever run the half-marathon distance in under one hour.

Michael Sandrock combines 22 years of experience as an award-winning sport journalist with over 30 years of running expertise.  His two books, Running with the Legends and Running Tough, mark Sandrock as an expert in the field of sports literature.  He currently covers running for the Daily Camera newspaper in Boulder, Colorado and has written for Running Times, Runner’s World, Marathon & Beyond, and Trail Runner.  An accomplished runner himself, Sandrock holds varsity letters in cross country and track from the University of Colorado, and a personal best of 2:24:00 in the marathon.  Sandrock is the founder of One World Running, a non-profit organization that donates new and used shoes to underprivileged athletes around the world.

6,500 LIMIT -  Registration will be limited to 6500 entrants.  Registration will close once we receive 6500 entrants.
Online Registration is preferred.  However, you may download and send in an entry form for an additional $10.  Mailed registrations postmarked after April 13, 2009 will not be accepted.
Confirmations required at packet pickup.  You must bring your confirmation with you as proof of entry to packet pickup.  Online registrations receive an instant confirmation.  If you mail your entry, you’ll need the confirmation card.
Starting area narrowed.  (click here to view start area).  In an effort to try to alleviate the crowdedness on the bike path (after the 10K point), we will narrow the starting area.  This will create a slower start and hopefully spread runners out better than in the past.  Note:  Your time does not begin until you cross the start line.  Gun times only count for top 10 men and women in both races.  Only runners competing for a top 10 place should line up close to start line.

CHAMPIONCHIP TIMING:  We are pleased to provide a chip-timed event as we have contracted ChampionChip Minnesota, Inc. to time our event once again.  Participants will be provided a gun time, chip time, and split times.  Split times provided at check points of 10K, Half & 20M.  Runners missing check point may be disqualified.  Overall awards will be based on gun times, but age-group awards will be based on chip times.

REGISTRATION:  Online registration is through Active.com.  No transaction fees are charged.  Registration close at 6500 entrants.  Otherwise, mailed entries will be accepted through April 13;  online registration will closes on April 27; in person registration will be at Runner's Expo (Sat, May 2, 9am-4pm) at Embassy Suites (10th & P Streets) - if limit is not met before May 2, 2009.
