LTC Distinguished Service Award 2017: Shelly Adcox

In February of 1998, the Lincoln Track Club kicked off its racing schedule with the legendary Statehood Run. For those of you who remember this race, it always took place near Nebraska’s birthday and the route was on the west edge of the city in a less than desirable locale on what was typically a frigid, windy day. And in 1998, this was going to be the last Statehood Run for a variety of reasons.Luckily for the LTC, State Farm wanted to partner with us to sponsor a race near their campus on 84th Street, and another legendary race was born. Their location was ideal with their proximity to the MoPac Trail, plenty of parking, and space for post-race festivities. More important for us, State Farm employee Shelly Adcox volunteered to be the race director, serving as the perfect liaison between State Farm, the LTC, and the running community. The success of the State Farm Run can be directly linked to Shelly’s vision, dedication, and guidance. For the past twenty years she has worked tirelessly to put on an event, which not only meets the standards of the LTC but also those of State Farm. Because of her efforts, more than 21,000 runners have crossed the finish line in nineteen years in either the 10-mile, 5K, or 1-mile races. The one thing she does not have control over is the weather. You never know if you are going to have hot and humid, rain, or snow at this race. But Shelly is always prepared for whatever Mother Nature delivers.Knowing how much work goes into organizing a race, Shelly also has been an invaluable volunteer with the LTC. Whenever we need someone to help at the finish line, hand out packets, work an aid station, cut fruit, and so much more, we knew we could count on Shelly to help out.Fast-forward twenty years, and this will be the last time the LTC partners with State Farm for this event. The LTC would like to thank Shelly for all she has done for the State Farm Run and the Lincoln Track Club. You have weathered the storm. Congratulations on being recognized as a 2017 recipient of the Lincoln Track Club Distinguished Service Award.
